As a young man, one of my majors in college was Philosophy and in that context I sort of relished the discussion relating to the problem of evil..., as far as God goes, how could an all knowing, all loving and all powerful God allow evil. In a Camusian way I tried to challenge all the institutional truths and tried to discern what could be, and what I would eventually believe. When working at Camp Courage, I came face to face with some illnesses and traumatic things that were sublime examples of this sort of thing... I made it through all that with a sense of faith and hope, a spiritual sense of soul, not necessarily rooted in peoples dogma, but real enough. I get the everlasting life thing to some extent, and that we cant understand some things; I also get the walk through the dark valley bit- but tell me, what about a child of 2 or 3 in West Africa, who contracted Ebola and cant be hugged, rocked or snuggled?! And dont think this is a us and them thing - that you can close the borders and stop the spread. Its also not political so just stop that crap. At the end of the day, God or not, our only hope is going to be working together to get through things, with the best minds and the best collaboration- a very great thinker who wrestled intimately with these things, Elie Weisel, said once, Love makes everything complicated. Ive been told that God is love- wishing much love on all of us who will be dealing with these things going forward, and that those children find peace.
