As always, the Ohio Valley Farmers’ Market will operate on - TopicsExpress

As always, the Ohio Valley Farmers’ Market will operate on Thursday from 3-6 at the Bel-Morr at exit 208 Morristown and on Saturday from 9 to noon at 32nd Street in Bellaire. In the Veggie Bins, you will find fresh local produce. What produce you ask? In all seriousness, I wish I could tell you :/ Unfortunately, its not that simple. For three weeks, I thought I would have zucchini. They just didnt grow. Doug thought he would be there last week with cabbage and peppers. They just didnt mature in time. So here is our best guess: Saturday, potatoes, zucchini, peppers, cabbage, Swiss chard, beets, kohlrabi, green onions, garlic, fennel, fresh herbs, and a FEW tomatoes. Thursday: we are hoping to see Bertram Farm and hopefully Pat French. I assume we will have blueberries again this week. For Your Shopping Pleasure, there will be fresh baked goods including delicious breads and sweets. At the Cooky Jar (Sat) and Northern Belles (Sat and Thurs) should be returning. There will be jewelry, personal care products and essential oils, dried herbs, pasture-raised meat and eggs, crafts, and jams and jellies available at both markets. In addition, plants, organic tea, locally roasted coffee, pickles, maple syrup, fresh-cut flowers, handmade soap, and more will be available on Saturday. At the market tent on Saturday, shoppers can sample blueberry scones, enjoy a cup of organic coffee, and pick up a free shopping tote provided by Belmont Savings Bank. At the Kids’ Corner, the OSU Extension Master Gardeners will return. Kids can make a garden flag using vegetables and flowers as stamps. All children are welcome to come join the fun! We accept USDA SNAP benefits. This service is made possible by Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Homes. Visit the market tent on Saturday for more information. Mark your calendar for our annual THE BIG GREEN EVENT on Saturday August 2. We have a great line-up of special guests and activities. You wont want to miss it!!!! Our Food for Thought...Our friends Jeff and Shelli are a fairly young couple. They moved back to Jeffs home area of Quaker City several years ago from California to be near Jeffs family and pursue their dream of farming and homesteading. I was shocked this spring to learn that they hung up their gardening tools and bought a house in Belmont. They found dabbling in real estate to be far more lucrative and much easier on the back than growing produce. While part of the reason for moving had to do with providing opportunities for their children, it saddens me to see another young couple leave farming because it required too much work and paid too little :( Over the years, we have seen a decline in the number of produce growers willing to sell at our local markets. Once the farming generation retires, their kids dont see the benefit in continuing to farm. Its sad and worrisome. Who is going to provide our food should we ever be faced with the need to provide for ourselves locally? Just a reminder that this is the last week to order frozen sour cherries from the Thorntons. The 10 lb tub is $31.50 and the 30 lb tub is $78.25. Stop and see them on Saturday or order from Mr. Greenjeans on Thursday. We are still accepting new vendors and are also looking for volunteers and musicians. Contact us for more information!! See you at the market!
