As an English Literature undergrad major and as a reading - TopicsExpress

As an English Literature undergrad major and as a reading specialist, I crave reading and actually enjoy literary analysis. As a teacher and specialist, I enjoy the explicit teaching and scaffolding of reading comprehension skills and strategies. However, are we doing overkill? From Gallaghers thought-provoking book READICIDE: Chloes [Mem Foxs daughter] lament encapsulates what has gone wrong in our schools: the creation of readicide through intensive overanalysis of literature and nonfiction. Young readers are drowning in a sea of sticky notes, marginalia, and double entry journals, and as a result, their love of reading is being killed... (p.59). I couldnt agree more and worry about new strategies like Close Reads. Yes, sometimes it is necessary to do repeated readings and to comprehend and understand on varying levels of sophistication. But, not for every text every time. What do you think?
