As an Ojibwe Two Spirit Midewiwin Woman, I take exception to the comments, As Native Americans reclaim their cultural and religious traditions lost to colonization and westward expansion. We have not lost our culture nor our religions or spiritual ways. Our ceremonies live on and thrive today, and Two Spirit individuals are present and as integral as our male and female gendered relatives to our ceremonial ways. I also take exception to the holding up the CDC as the federal agency doing so much regarding HIV, as Native Americans were the only racial group to show and increase in HIV infections. This past year, not one Native organization was funded to provide training and technical assistance to Native organizations. Indeed, there is only one directly funded Native organization in the entire country funded for prevention efforts by the CDC. In addition, in the newly released RFP for funding prevention efforts, Tribal Nations are eliminated as they are not within the geographic boundaries eligible for funding. The CDC says, tribal nations can seek funding from their state health departments. What happened to, we will provide health care in exchange for your land for as long as the grass shall grow and the rivers shall flow? If HRC wants to do write something for Native American Heritage Month why not a story written by an Indigenous person to North America? Or how about the lack of funds for Two Spirit organizations? Or how about giving 1percent of HRCs budget to one of the Two Spirit gatherings? Just a thought…..Sharon M. Day, Ojibwe.
