As an artist Ive always sought to find The Truth. It sounds pretentious, but to me theres no point in making music if youre not trying to express your actual point of view, your actual trials and tribulations. And a step beyond that, to push yourself, to not settle for the first thing that comes to mind as Truth, but to discover, often painfully, how you really feel through the act of writing/creation. The unfortunate thing you find is that this very real but very personal and spiritual quest in no way aligns with the Music Industry of America, which is, as Ive sadly come to discover, based on the same thing that the rest of American Captialism is based on: selling an idealized version of an identity back to the people, not based on the truth and perspective of the presenter, but on the illusions of the consumer. The conclusion of this Monday morning rant is solely: if youre a consumer of music, try to think about what you really like about the music you listen to. Entertainment and pure escapism is definitely needed from time to time, but is that your only goal when you put on the headphones? As an artist, is the thing youre releasing into the world vulnerable? Does it make you uncomfortable because it actually reveals who you are and what you think? Or are you just a reflection of what everyone listening wants you to be? If so, youre probably going to do very well for yourself, but not for the art your creating. Old Man Out/
