As an artist, Leonardo was vastly inferior to Michelangelo and Raphael. As a scientist, he never had a breakthrough discovery or invention -- apart from his anatomical findings. But he was more curious (in all aspects of nature and human existence) than everyone else during his time and for that, we see him as genius. And it also didnt hurt that he was very handsome and always well-dressed despite coming from a poor family; Because of that - and his natural charm - he was admired by many (including guys, yes) and was able to work with rich, intelligent, and influential people (who fell head over heels in love with him) who made sure his name will be remembered. To quote Giorgio Vasari (who had a huge crush on Leonardo): “In the normal course of events many men and women are born with various remarkable qualities and talents; but occasionally, in a way that transcends nature, a single person is marvellously endowed by heaven with beauty, grace and talent in such abundance that he leaves other men far behind… Everyone acknowledged that this was true of Leonardo da Vinci, an artist of outstanding physical beauty who displayed infinite grace in everything he did and who cultivated his genius so brilliantly that all problems he studied were solved with ease. He possessed great strength and dexterity; he was a man of regal spirit and tremendous breadth of mind…”
