As an atheist not against religion - who actually planned to be a priest until I stopped believing (pre-confirmation) - the various (all too human) projections of humourless deities have always perplexed me. For instance, the medieval notion of a Christian God so somehow unself-aware (plus insensitive / pompous enough) to enthrone Himself like a jewel amidst a wreath of wings - surrounded by angelfluff trilling their perfect /eternal/ hallelujahs and not get bored...was troubling. The conceptions of intelligences of such a magnitude beyond ours being bound by their own (reported) dogma / hype, so self-absorbed they saw their vast creations best use as raw fuel for raging egos are even more unbelievable to me. No, the only Gods I can even theoretically picture would be genuinely so much warmer, happier, funnier - because ultimately, fundamentally more understanding than us apes best efforts (I mean, the universe would be their open mind right?) Theyd core right through us, theyd see the whole (social / biographical / historical) web that snared and gummed our own thoughts and acts - all the perceived slights, the blind ambitions, the perversions of intentions - and theyd smelt with a glance the resultant stains on souls. I dunno. I have no point (not for the first or last time...) Maybe just my own (yes, projected) belief - if there were an Allah, a God, or any of the others - theyd be more like the kindest, most loving of us than the least. I really believe thats who most people of faith worship (and who hopefully impact on their own worldview and actions / interactions). Finally (finally!) for those, like me, without faith - well, I wouldnt want to speak for anyone else, but I still believe this species has the ultimate capacity to grow in that direction. I think well get better. I think we are. Just at a rate thats hard to see from within the short span of a single human life.
