As an expert Trauma/Critical Care Surgeon, I can equivocally state that the tactics employed in this video by the NYPD to takedown the morbidly obese Eric Garner constituted the application excessive force that ultimately killed him. Any competent Surgeon/Anesthsiologist knows that airway of a morbidly obese(2X ideal body weight) individual is easily compromised and can be compressed by lying down flat. Anatomically the morbidly obese have a preponderance of fatty tissue deposits in the neck and chest that occlude the airway in the supine or prone positions. The NYPD applied an illegal, banned chokehold to the neck of the morbidly obese(He reportedly weighed 400 pounds), asthmatic Mr Garner; restricted his chest wall excursions by sitting on him; and pinned his face to the sidewalk all of which rendered him unable to breathe. The actions of the NYPD to takedown the morbidly obese Mr Garner constitutes criminally negligent homocide by suffocation. Mr Garner died in the streets of NYC. The coroner was remiss in not pointing out to the Staten Island Grand Jury that the application of a chokehold to a suspect of any ethnicity with a morbidly obese body habitus is criminal and uniformly fatal.
