As an instructor my natural inclination is to disagree with Ryan Ottleys art school opinion but he has a lot of valid points: ryanottley.deviantart/journal/Meaty-Message-489853562 … I will say that training the way Ryan did can be difficult for a lot of people. Its hard to self-impose that intense structure. Reading Ryans journal entry, its clear he was hyper-disciplined. Inspiring and yet more proof of why hes a pro. Creative fields require discipline and dedication, however you get there. Its not just about going to school or following tutorials. Attitude, communication, and time management determine success as much as raw artistic skill. A good school teaches those soft skills too. Ive taught hundreds of students over the years. Its inspiring and exhausting at the same time. I love it, but its a tough business. Yes, you can learn on your own. The resources are out there and you can save money...BUT, a good art school is more than rote instruction. Good art schools push you into new areas you wouldnt have explored on your own. It holds you to deadlines and provides a community of peers. That group of fellow students become your first industry contacts as they head into the business. They inspire and grow alongside you. That said, people who want to go into art should shop carefully. There are shady schools aplenty. Dont assume that a schools website and photos tell the whole story. Do your homework and be careful. Find out where their graduates are. Find out who their instructors are. Get a tour if you can. Talk to current/former students/grads. Everyones situation is different. Do your research and decide if its worth the money. Dont put yourself into crippling debt. I feel like Canadians have an edge with generally lower tuitions and provincial health coverage once you graduate. Thats why theres so many Canadian comic artists, people! Health coverage and winters where you stay inside drawing all day. ;)
