As an interfaith minister who honors various traditions and incorporates rituals from many and who has no right to tell anyone what to believe spiritually, I still struggle with understanding teachings that are fear based and exclusionary. My belief is that God is about love and that no one is exempt regardless of who and how they love, whether they embrace a particular religion or act at any end of the life spectrum. The God of my understanding is more about what provides sustenance and solace, comfort and compassion, than whether anyone drinks the Kool aid.
