As an international student in the U.S. on an F1 visa, it is illegal to work. There are a few exceptions, though. https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/working-in-the-united-states 1. You can do CPT/OPT Internships and practical training at a nearby company or organization for 12 months. For more information, go to ice.gov/sevis/practical-training. Students in science, technology, engineering or math get an extension and can do CPT/OPT for up to 29 months total. 2. You can get an on-campus job or work study opportunity working in a library, office, cafeteria, facility, tutoring program, etc. 3. You can get a paid, on-campus graduate assistant position in teaching or research.
