As another year draws to a close, ask yourself: Am I just a fan of Jesus or a committed follower? What does it cost to be a follower of a man who said such things as, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even life itself—such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple (Luke 14: 26-27).” Many days we find ourselves too comfortable in the lifestyle we live. Some of us are pretty much able to do whatever we really want to do. We are blessed with excellent health care, much more than adequate shelter, and spend more than we should on clothes. So what did Jesus mean when he said, “Those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples” (Luke 14:33)? What if for one year, one month or one week we each reflected on and lived out the passage in Philippians 2 that describes imitating Christ’s humility. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interest but each of you to the interest of others. In your relationships with one another, have the same attitude of mind Christ Jesus had.” Sometimes We each must wonder if we have the courage to follow Christ. It’s not that we are called to be a missionary or undertake a dangerous mission on his behalf. What gives us pause is this: I want to have the ‘same’ attitude that was in Christ Jesus, but we don’t want to be poor, and we quail at the thought of being empty. If that is you---don’t think youre alone. Jesus ‘did not regard equality with God something to be grasped,’ but we seem to have an insatiable need to grasp at those things that elevate our stature. Everything in us longs to be in control, to feel safe, to think well of ourselves, and to have others think well of us. This is our poverty. It is only in the continual recognition of our own poverty that we find the courage to follow.
