As artist, we know very well that something can "not be done," only until someone does it. Some artist, somewhere, decides to shove the fence back a little and extend his or her and all of our range. SHOWBOAT brought serious concerns to musical theater. OKLAHOMA and CAROUSEL brought "real" stories and characters and plays that could stand in their own right as dramatic material. The musical was no longer defined merely as boy-meets-girl - from Rodgers and Hammerstein on out, it tackled real issues and ideas. They had moved the fence, buying everyone more creative acreage.
