As drug policy reformers, we have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season. We are witnessing a pivotal shift toward more ethical and responsible drug laws. Four states and the District of Columbia have voted to fully legalize and regulate marijuana; several more are expected to do so in 2016. Harm reduction initiatives such as naloxone distribution, syringe exchange programs and “Good Samaritan” laws exempting witnesses to an overdose from arrest and prosecution for minor drug law violations are taking critical steps toward disease prevention and combating overdose deaths. Most significantly, public opinion is swaying toward a more rational, compassionate approach to drug policy, and it’s been a long time coming. Law Enforcement Against Prohibition has been a leading voice in calling for legalization, regulation and control for more than a decade. Our speakers and staff give so much to this movement – their tireless efforts in working to end drug prohibition are inspiring, and make me truly grateful to work side by side with them, giving our all to end this senseless drug war.
