As enthusiastic Odonatologists we are all aware that the 2014 flight season is gradually coming to an end and that most of us are only seeing Common Darters, a couple of the Hawkers, and most of the other species have finished for this year. Consequently this afternoon I wondered whether to bother taking any more photos of the male Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum) which has set up territory in my garden when he settled on a wooden fence. But, being addicted.... Unusually I also had the macro lens with me instead of only the 300mm in the garden and found that he allowed me to approach closer and closer and closer... To the extent that my 100mm macro lens was closer than its limit and I had to back away. Stephen Darlington, for the first time I now think I need that 1.4x. I took 116 shots and this is one of my favourites. Its going to be a long night of processing! [Canon 100mm F/2.8L Macro IS on 70D and onboard flash]
