As everyone gets amped up for a long weekend, take a moment to remember why the banks are closed, school isnt in session, and the mail isnt being delivered. To the surprise of many, Monday isnt National Barbecue Day, but Memorial Day. A day set aside to remember those that have given everything they had for America and they did it expecting nothing in return but to be remembered for their sacrifice this one day a year. The pictures below are the brave men that didnt make it back from my deployment in Iraq, and the black bracelets I wear on my wrist are a constant reminder of the gift of life Ive been given and an opportunity that shouldnt be squandered. You too should consider it a gift and live a life worthy of these men who couldnt be here today to live theirs. Not doing anything on Monday? Head to the local cemetery and search out the gravestones marked with an American flag fluttering in the wind. See if your local VFW or American Legion is holding a parade, a BBQ, or a Memorial Day service, and better yet, see if you can help. If nothing else, just raise a beer to all those who have given so much. If youre in the Napa area, Ill be part of the St. Helena American Legion Post 199s ceremony on the honor guard, bringing in one of the flags. Starts at 10am at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Should be short and sweet followed by a barbecue at the American Legion Hall and should be a good time.
