As everyone knows (and some have overlooked), today is April 1, which is also known as April Fools Day. I decided to take part in it by posting a fictional write up about an imaginary scuba expedition team which I was supposed to lead. The team was supposed to go to Ayungin Shoal to dive its pristine waters, refurbish the grounded Philippine Navy ship that serves as an outpost for Philippine Marines and entertain them with a variety show. To my amusement, some of my Facebook friends commented with well-wishes and congratulatory greetings, obviously not realizing that the whole thing was made up. Most of them probably did not click on the link at the very end of the write up which, if clicked would lead to a page announcing the April Fools Day prank. A few immediately noticed the tell-tale signs of the prank even without clicking on the link at the end. First is the name of the team, Philippine Expeditionary Scuba Team with the acronym PEST. Second is the word aquabatics, supposedly a kind of scuba diving the team was going to make. Theres no such thing. Then theres the supposed mission of refurbishing the grounded ship by renovating it to 5-star hotel standards including bath tubs. And finally, the ship that was supposed to bring the team to Ayungin--the BRP Rice Terraces. The Philippine Navy doesnt have such a ship. I dont think they would even name any of their ship with that. The photo included in the post was taken last August 2013 on board the Canadian ship HMS Regina. It was amusing but there are lessons there...first, read all the way to the bottom when you read a post in the internet or social media. Second, check the link provided. Third, check the information presented. Fourth, even reputable persons or entities may make a mistake or worse, intentionally lie or fabricate what they post online. Sorry people, if you got taken for a ride. Forgive me, its April Fools Day. I wont do it again. (Its still April 1 as Im writing this)....Cheers!
