As for a few highlights on Brian Juarez, our Maytag Dependable Leader Finalist: *He is a senior at King Drew Magnet School *He hopes to attend NYU (and is applying early decision as we speak!) to study Psychology *He has volunteered for over a year as our Executive Directors assistant/right-hand man *He battles Depression and Anxiety. He openly shares his story (see the Start the Story video below) about his battle with suicidal thoughts and is working on a program for our younger Club kids to be aware of mental health issues, from teen suicide to depression. He is also developing a robotics course to teach the younger kids the joys of hands-on science. *He was selected as ABC7s Cool Kid this spring *He was one of the top picks at the UCLA Football Team & Coach Moras Community Draft *He has been a public speaker at a number of venues, including the Jim Mora Count on Me Family Foundations most recent charity event *He brings his sister to the Club (located in an extremely dangerous neighborhood) every day. Every weekend, he wakes up at 4am to help his grandfather. He lives in one of the most dangerous, impoverished and neglected neighborhoods in America. His family calls home a tiny unit in a housing project in Watts. *As I was driving him to UCLA to give his speech for the Community Draft, I witnessed him personally talk to, and calm down, a suicidal friend. Instead of practicing his speech, or fussing over his appearance, he made sure his friend received the support they desperately needed. *Being a part of Brians life will change yours.
