As happens each year, the Beloit Mindset List for the Class of 2018 has been released, at: beloit.edu/mindset/2018/ Many of the Beloit items are written from the perspective of the parents (or grandparents), not the students. Instead, lets consider a few things from the perspective of the students: 1) Most incoming students have no direct memory of 9/11. They likely were not allowed to see it on TV, as they were starting Kindergarten at that moment. 2) These students do not remember a time that UM was defending itself against admissions lawsuits. The 2003 Supreme Court decisions are in the history books, not in memory. 3) When you discuss the Iraq War, they only know of the one after 9/11, not the first one. 4) The iPod has always existed. They probably would look at you oddly if you discussed another mp3 player. 5) Not only does Madonna have an invitation to Michigans Parents Weekend, Eminem has an invitation to Michigan States Parents Weekend. Both could be driving cars with bumper stickers celebrating their honor roll daughters. 6) Contrary to Beloits assertion, students have little memory of Ralph Nader as a presidential contender. 7) When you say President Bush, they only know of George W. Bush. 8) Their parents dont even remember that MSNBC started as a tech and entertainment channel, and Slate started as a partnership of Microsoft and news media. The technology emphasis of both faded quickly. 9) Phantom of the Opera has always been on Broadway. In fact, their parents may have had a first date there. 10) Facebook has been publicly available since they were 10. 11) Smartphones have been available as long as they have carried phones. 12) Active shooter drills have always happened on campus. Sadly, these address present needs. 13) Columbine happened before they were in Kindergarten. 14) Vaccines have always been controversial and optional. 15) They have never memorized phone numbers. Phone numbers are stored in their contact apps. 16) They have never known a world with Tupac Shakur, Gene Kelly, Carl Sagan, Barbara Jordan, Erma Bombeck, or Tiny Tim. 17) They are unfamiliar with the oddly compelling goodness of the Book of Lists. 18) Backstreets back, alright?
