As kids we called them woolly worms! Its the larva of a species - TopicsExpress

As kids we called them woolly worms! Its the larva of a species of tiger moth (Pyrrharctia isabella), or the woolly bear caterpillar. Theyre about 1 1⁄2 inches long and are bristly with black stripes on each end and a reddish brown stripe in the middle. When touched they will curl up into a ball. Heres the question: Can wooly bears really predict what the upcoming winter will be like? According to folklore if its black stripes are longer than the middle stripe, the winter will be harsh/or if the rusty center stripe is very wide the winter will be mild. But the accuracy rate of the woolly bears forecast has been difficult for scientists to determine. Most often the stripes within a group will vary greatly thus making a forecast hard to confirm....(Kind of like listening to the local weather forecasts ;) In Banner Elk, North Carolina, folks celebrate the upcoming ski season with an annual Woolly Worm Festival and Race.
