As many of you know I am a huge advocate for individuals with complex disabilities especially those who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. However, I am saddened by the use of famous/brilliant individuals names who have not been formally diagnosed as a way to encourage individuals on the spectrum. Mainly individuals like Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and Mozart. These individuals have been theoretically placed on the spectrum via retrospective diagnosis. This type of diagnosis uses reported behavior and anecdotal evidence NOT scientific fact/direct observation. I feel that using these people and labeling them autistic is wrong. I am all about inspiring youth but can we stick to fact?!? There are many successful individuals on the spectrum. For example, Dr. Temple Grandin (professor and livestock expert) Satoshi Tajiri (creator of Pokemon), Tim Page (writer, editor, and Pulitzer Prize winner), and Dr. Dawn Prince-Hughes (Primatologist and Ethnologist) to name a few. Inspire with fact not fiction! #factnotfiction Rant complete. Thanks for reading :-)
