As many of you know by now, Drago, the Dragon People, won the July - TopicsExpress

As many of you know by now, Drago, the Dragon People, won the July Palio this year. It was an amazing race, with no falls or injuries. Acquila the Eagle People, with Gingillo riding Polonski, took an early lead over Pantera the Panther People, their traditional enemy whose horse, Indianos, was the favorite, a large and magnificent, calm pale grey. At the Mossa, the starting line, there was much wrestling for position between these two. But Polonski took and kept the lead for the first lap, with Indianos a length or two behind. But then the Dragons horse, a spirited dapple grey named Oppio whom Id described several times as a nut, passed Indianos at the sharp San Martino curve, coming inside and forcing the larger horse to the outside wall. Then at the next corner, Casato, Oppio did it again, forcing inside Polonski and taking the lead despite Gingillos blows of the nerbo, the deadly whip they wield. The Dragon kept the lead for the full final lap, Indianos falling behind Selva the Forest Peoples horse Quit Gold, Polonski two or three lengths behind Oppio until the very end, Gingillo reigning in at the last moment to let Selva cross the finish line in the worst-possible second place. Our friend Nicolo is Barbaresco, head groom, for Acquila, and we got his run down on the race. Polonski is a fast horse, but in the end Oppio was faster; and while the fantino Gingillo is consistently excellent, Girolamo for the Dragon is crazy and inconsistent, but occasionally pulls off an incredible bit of riding. I decided not to shoot the race itself, choosing to experience it instead. (I did shoot the middle lap...) this is the Dragons winning, and climbing the Palco dei Giudici to claim their prize, the hand-painted Drappelone. The passion and joy are amazing, as they hug, kiss, and paw at the beautiful silk. I love that the system is they dont give it to you until you climb up and take it. The Dragons celebrated for days - in fact theyre probably carting it around town with drummers, flagmen, and whistling pacifiers right now: if theyre home theyre ringing their church bell and singing.
