As many of you may remember Reversalas original doctor, Dr DeTora - TopicsExpress

As many of you may remember Reversalas original doctor, Dr DeTora who performed her last 2 surgeries left VOSM where she is being treated several months ago and is working at an excellent veterinary hospital in Massachusetts. Anyway , I wanted to keep him posted so i have had several conversations with him via email . I had asked him about an ankle brace for her since her bone still hasnt filled in on the one side and i sent him her most recent x rays. ( She is due for another set of xrays i believe next week ) Anyhow, I thought you would like to see his last response to me : Mr. Richards, I am so sorry to respond so late (to be honest I thought I responded a while back!). As far as her radiographs go - her fibula has resorbed secondary to her chronic instability and infection, which is ok from a function standpoint as the fibula is not a major wt. bearing bone. Her tibia does look like it has bridged under the plate medially but still has a defect on the lateral cortex. There is low likelihood at this point for the defect to fill in. As far as stress protection and preventing fracture etc. the plate would have to fail and break (which can happen, albeit a low risk) in order for the bone to break again. My concern from a protection standpoint would be if we protect her bone excessively (plate and brace) her bone has little desire to get stronger (similar to an osteopenic person in bed, if they do not walk and stress their bones, they shrink, excessive protection will decrease the stress on her bones and cause them to get weaker, not stronger. How is she doing? Is she still walking on her limb and using it fairly well?
