As most Californians know, its the 25th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake. That day I was with friends at Candlestick Park in SF waiting for the As-Giants World Series game to start when we felt a tremendous rumbling and shaking. At first I thought it must be Giants fans stomping on the concrete, but when the overhang just above us started swaying I knew it was a quake -- a BIG one! Amazingly, no one panicked -- in fact, moments later you could hear cries of Play ball! Perhaps 15 minutes later news began trickling in over transistor radios (no cell phones back then) -- Sam Francisco on fire! Bridges down! Thats when people started trying to leave. Players were running across the field, family members jumping down to join them. We didnt get out of the parking lot for hours, which was when it really hit me. Off in the distance we could see the fires in the SF Marina, no street lights to block the shocking sight. As we approached the San Mateo Bridge we heard that it had just reopened -- halfway across I wondered how they could possibly have checked it so quickly... Got home at midnight.
