As most of you know I enjoy Fine arts along with photography. So last night I ventured out into Pensacola to take a few candid street shots with my Pentax film camera. Today I want to share with you the experience I had while trying to explain the emotions and lessons I have learned while looking through the glass. It started with me sitting at home yesterday evening making minor repairs to my ale 1970’s Pentax 35mm film camera. I decided to go out and take a few candid black and white photos of people fishing off the Pensacola Bay fishing pier. I got in my truck and started driving down the newly repaired roads in Pensacola that were destroyed in a recent flood. On the way I found a beautiful spot along the highway and noticed a photographer taking pictures of the scenery. I drove on by because I already had a spot in mind and the sun was setting fast. Then I saw something that caught my attention, a group of people gathering at a well known bridge nicknamed the Graffiti Bridge. They had birthday balloons with messages tied to the end of them. I stopped and watched as they started spray painting the entire bridge white and wrote “HAPPY BIRTHDAY THOMAS”. Thomas died a few months ago of cancer and yesterday they celebrated his birthday. After that I arrived at the pier, got out of my truck, and started walking down the pier taking pictures of all kinds of people. There were families, single men and women, some were fishing for fun and some were fishing for food. In the first picture I am posting with this is a picture of a family who uses this time every month to draw their family together. The second picture is of a man who lit up a cigarette after his pole was dragged into the bay by what he thought was a shark. The third picture is hard to see but it’s of a homeless man and his sick dog. Let me explain this picture a little more. As I was walking down the bay I heard a man singing and crying. As I walked up to him he started begging his dog “Please get up, Please get up!”. The man then went and got some water from a near by fountain and the dog slowly drank it. The picture is of the man laying on a table with his arms wrapped around his only friend that may not make it thru the night. After that I decided to go home and on the way as I was passing the place on the side of the highway I came upon hundreds of flashing red and blue lights. As I looked past the firetruck I saw the same man that was taking pictures of the beautiful landscape laying on the ground and his wife crying because someone had lost control of their car and hit him on the side of the road. You may have realized I didnt take pictures of everything yesterday, there was a reason for that. The reason photography exist is so people can capture a moment in time to cherish it forever. So as a photographer that is what I strive to do. However I believe that sometimes we try too hard to capture those moments. Instead I want to challenge anyone with a camera to put it down for a second. Instead of trying to capture the moment, live in the moment because we spend too much time looking thru the glass and not living life.
