As most of you know, Ryan and I have continued our education in that greatest of universities known as the school of life. We travel this great nation of ours, state by state, city by city, town by town...one mile at a time. In that grand and sometimes not so grand venue, we have had the opportunity to experience unique characteristics of each state by getting to know the lay of the land and the heart of its people. This past Saturday, I sat perched high atop the bleachers in assigned Death Valley seating that was almost too confusing to find and watched the Gamecocks get their feathers plucked by a much better Clemson football team. Nick and I were quick to call the design on their beverage cup ugly...because we were frustrated that our team wasnt doing better and Clemson University gave us no other reason to complain. The Tiger fans sitting beside us were much to nice to spit on their shoes...so thats all we had! I looked around and saw students watching the game while picnicking on a hill, beautiful farm land and Lake Hartwell under a clear blue sky. I thought about all of those beautiful places we have been...and realized that on this day, win or lose, Nothing Could be Finer than to be in Carolina! I was fortunate enough to have a seat in Death Valley, one of the hottest tickets in the country on that particular day. We are abundantly blessed with the majesty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, salt marshes and beaches of the Atlantic and a whole lot of beautiful topograghy and people in between. Some wear orange and some wear garnet...but they all know that it is special to live in a state with two big-time universities to support such a great tradition of unsurpassed rivalry. The University of South Carolina is bent, but not broken. Our Fighting Gamecocks left a lot of feathers on that playing field on Saturday, but they live to play for tomorrow and win. The loss will light a fire inside them, and the complacency of winning will be no more...at least for a while. And, so it goes! Many years from now, our grandchildren will still be arguing on the playground about which is the better school! Long live the rivalry...South Carolina would not be the same without it! So hold your head high and strut your stuff my fine, defeathered friends...the plumage will grow back, fuller and more beautiful than ever...and tomorrow, well... that is a new day!
