As most of you know we here at BYO love all things outdoors. And one of our favorite things to do in these winter months is go ice fishing. But in order to do this you have to have some specialized equipment. Im not saying that you have to go out and buy a lot of cashy gear. Hell, you can chop a hole in the ice with an axe and use a regular fishing rod but the gear we are going to cover in the next few articles will help make it a lot easier. And the truth is none of it is all that expensive. So lets start with the one thing that you need first to help you get through the ice with ease and thats the ice auger. There are many types of different styles, the old spoon style, which is a lot of work and horrible to use I know Ive used one. Then there is the screw type auger, which is shown in the picture. You can get these that work manually or motorized. Ive got a manual one myself, the motorized ones can be a little expensive. The size of the auger is up to you they range anywhere from 6 inch to 12 inch hole diameter . If youre going to go with the big size you might really consider a motorized auger. I myself carry a six inch and that does everything I needed to do. Plus this size rides nicely on my ice fishing sled that I use to carry all my gear out onto the ice ,when I go fishing. During those times when it is not in use, good way to take care of your auger is to hang it up in storage out of the way. Also make sure you cover the blades. If youre like me, I have long since lost or broke my blade cover. So when my auger is not in use I will sharpen the blades just like you would a knife, with a sharpening stone. And then I will cover the blades with a little bit of duct tape. This helps keep the rust off your blades and protect them from getting banged around or dulled. By doing this I am ensuring that my auger will be ready for use the next time I hit the ice. I hope this little tip helps you out on your next ice fishing adventure. And we will be posting some more ideas for ice fishing gear here at your Backyard Outdoors.
