As most of you may know by now, this is a subject that is very close to me. While I was waiting for a liver, I was painfully aware that my chances of getting a match were greatly reduced, not only because of my blood group but my race. As a result of the complexities of having a foreign body inside of you, the transplant team work very hard to find a close a match as possible. This can some times mean waiting for a very long time. The NHS has worked tirelessly over the years to raise awareness among our community but some times it seems to no avail. Many people of all races die waiting for an organ but that number dramatically increases in our community. In spite of all the complications over the past 7 months, and the ongoing ones, and the fact that I seem to spent most of my time on Ward 83 and not at home, we would not want the alternative.
