As much as I adore it, theres an odd moment near the beginning of the film of THE AGE OF INNOCENCE. Its not in the published script, and its not the same action that takes place in book (I just checked). Its in the box at the opera when Mrs. Welland says to Newland Archer, You know my niece, Countess Olenska? Michelle Pfieffer, whos been living abroad, extends her hand as though she expects it to be kissed. Archer does not kiss it, and she pulls it back to her with the strangest look on her face. I cant decide if shes supposed to feel slightly embarrassed, or that Newalnd is a dolt for not picking up on the cue (even though shes now in New York). In the book he bows and Ellen keeps her hands together on her lap. Opinions?
