As much as I love envelope-pushing indy games like Dear Esther, Gone Home or The Stanley Parable, every now and then its good to fire up an old-fashioned FPS-on-rails corridor shooter. And if you were to ask how much more old-fashioned FPS-on-rails corridor shooter could the Call of Duty games get... the answer would be none. None more old-fashioned FPS-on-rails corridor shooter. Having bought it in some sale or other I finally got round to playing through the Modern Warfare 2 campaign and frankly... it rocks! It is corridors all the way, even when its open tundra, but its a rollicking rollercoaster that only ever pauses briefly for exposition (none of which feels like padding) and has more than enough everyone is a baddie in war pointers to undercut the gung-ho stuff... even when youre surrounded by marines yelling Hoo-hah! The story has twists and turns a-plenty (though nothing you wouldnt have seen coming if you stopped to think about it instead of leaping behind a broken piece of aircraft fuselage to avoid a hand-grenade). It keeps you moving towards the next plot point with anticipation The controversial airport scene? Well yeah, its pretty gnarly, but its no more gnarly than a modern Hollywood action film... which is basically what the CoD games are... modern Hollywood action films, but instead of watching Bruce Willis play the hero, you get to run alongside Bruce Willis and be the hero too (or in this case Lance Henriksen and a couple of Scottish blokes who were in Dog Soldiers. Which is even better). Basically its a shed-load of fun if you enjoy a frenetic action film. Utterly irrelevant to you if you dont.
