As much as Im enjoying the new Cosmos, I cant help but feel theres something missing--the personal touch. Carl Sagan was more than just a host; he was sort of a friend. He didnt just talk us through the episodes, he had a conversation with us. He was the Mr. Rogers of science. So far Im not getting that from Tyson. But then maybe todays audience wouldnt have the patience for that. This new series definitely has a sense of wonder, and has it in spades. It instills that primal curiosity, the burning desire to see whats around the next corner or over the next hill or in that hole or on the next planet. Thats really what science is about. The chemicals and the long Latin names and the taxonomy and all the fancy equipment, all those things are just the tools. But at the bottom of it is fearless curiosity. And Im thankful to Dr. Tyson for bringing it back into our world.
