As my children will tell you, this is a PERSONAL PET PEEVE for me. And let us not forget tenses as well. Their house should never be misconstrued to be the same as They house. This is either laziness, ignorance, or just a plain lack of education. You ASK someone a question, you dont AX them a question. The latter could draw unwanted police attention. Language is what separates humans from plants and animals. When used in the prescribed manner people avoid misunderstandings. When used correctly, people will always understand the exact intent of the idea or concept being conveyed. Though I am not a Ditto-Head, Rush Limbaugh does have one thing 100% correct: Words Mean Things.
