As my daughter will tell you, sometimes I like to follow a thought - TopicsExpress

As my daughter will tell you, sometimes I like to follow a thought until Ive completely beaten it to death. Lately Ive been reading and watching videos about sailing, especially those people who have adopted, for at least a period of time, the gypsy lifestyle. I ran into this same lifestyle when reading about long distance hikers. Most long distance hikers will hike one trail, one time, and then be done with it. But there is a subset of long distance hikers who end up living for the trail. They take a day job during the winter, live like crap, saving their money for hiking season. When hiking season comes around, theyre back on the trail. There are similar people who do the same thing, except theyre sailing. (Allegedly around the world, although that is not evident by their actions, moving generally either east or west but stopping at islands and harbors for extended periods of time.) They try to make some money while travelling, but if they run out of money they put the boat on land, go home for a year, and then continue their journey. What Ive noticed is that I primarily hear about men doing this, not women. In most cases, the women Ive heard doing this are acting as auxiliaries to the men. Im wondering if this is actually a gender difference, or the women who do this dont publicize themselves like the men (posting videos, etc.). One thing Ive noticed is that the cost of a used circumnavigation capable sailboat is not that much. I could easily see three women working and living like crap for a year to save up the money for a boat, plus something to live on while sailing. (The time in your life when youre more willing to just go off is before youve created all those responsibilities that stop you from running off for a while. Also, when youre young, your required living standards tend to be lower; our old drummer shared a loft with 17 people in the Village. I doubt hed do it now that hes gotten older.) While sailing, they can pull together more cash as necessary. So, is this a gender difference, or am I just not seeing whats happening out there? sailboatlistings/
