As my first official blog post, I wanted to touch on how this project came to be; because it was very close to never coming to fruition at all. In the vastly diverse, and particularly overwhelming, world of indie publishing I can honestly tell you that I had no idea what I was doing. All that was in my arsenal was a story to tell, and I needed someone to help me do it. However, I quickly realized that the internet was filled with virtual pirates scouring for vulnerable young artists with new ideas, and looking to take advantage of my sincere creative intentions and a pocket book that was less modest than I’d care to boast about here. Even large companies that I had deemed “safe” were only out to make a quick buck and take my fantastic story and rush it out as fast as possible. Like many young people, I had always fantasized about being a writer. But I also had a very jaded and sheltered way of viewing the world of publishing, both traditional and independently. As a matter of fact, “indie” publishing was a completely foreign subject to me as of one year ago. I knew people had done it successfully, but I still assumed a big box book company or a small vanity press was fueling the distributive fires behind the curtain. Then I met a new kind of publicist/agent/know-all. She was a fresh and powerful part of this strange and organic infrastructure growing behind the scenes in the world of publishing; one that is quickly tightening its noose around the necks of big publishers.
