As my prayers hovered on Syria this weekend, they focused also on our country and our leadership. Much of the media and commentators projected negativity. Retaliation. Find out who is to blame and make them pay. This is a clear opportunity to stop speaking in terms of labels and speak of people. Men, women, and children who matter. This is an opportunity to define foreign policy as one of rebuilding. A time of discussion of positive changes, rather than that of more war and bombings; discuss values which we can stand behind and with, in the name of saving humanity from further destruction. This is an opportunity for our country to lead in a manner that promotes not the rhetoric we have come to expect and have learned to succumb, but one of compassion, fairness, and the will to live peacefully. It is through this approach that we may rebuild not just a country, but the rebuilding of nations on which we can all count. The world needs a leader. We can be the leader of hope and change for the good. We must want it; need it; demand it. Peace.
