As my son Andrew is off spending his first week in basic training in the Army, myself, Nicole, and Amber, along with others, are preparing the funeral of a man that we need to stop and take note of. His name is Charles Chuck Tatum. Google this man and you will find that not only was he a war hero who was among the first into the battle of Iwo Jima (U.S. Marine), but had many other interesting parts to his life (built race cars, wrote the book Red Blood, Black Sand, had a large amount of input into the making of The Pacific produced by Tam Hanks and Steven Spielberg). He lived within a mile or two of me and I didnt even know it. I suspect that many of us Stocktonians dont know of him. But his generation... The Greatest Generation is fast disappearing from our midst. Chuck, and those like him, can teach us a lot about what freedom is, what it costs, and how never to take it for granted.
