As noted below by my friend, Kevin Sessums, I was lucky enough to be his guest at a performance in San Francisco last night, featuring Tommy Tune and a woman I have adored since the first time I laid eyes on her (and the first time I heard her voice), Carol Channing. (On this note: I actually bought myself a bubble cut blonde wig , the summer of 1971, when I was 17 years old, and wore it to my job in Boston every day. My personal homage to CC, though I never told anyone that.) Shes 93 now. When the curtain opened, we saw her seated on a directors chair , wearing a white pantsuit, with her platinum blonde bob, and that crazily expressive face--obviously older but instantly recognizable. Ill call her beautiful. And sharp. For the next sixty minutes, she regaled us with stories, and occasionally broke into song (Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend, and of course Hello Dolly). She looked a little fragile--didnt get up our of the chair--but if I can be doing as well as she is, at age 93 (soon to be 94), Ill consider myself a lucky woman. She delivered one of her trademark sketches last night: The story of silent film star Cecilia Sisson, and her mysterious disappearance from the silver screen. Here she is doing this one, quite a few years back on the Andy Williams show, performing this one. Then you will know why I love this woman. I will add: It was perfect seeing this show on the week of my birthday. Kevin and I noted that we were among the youngest members of the audience. Id like to suggest that you send this link to some member of the younger generation today (your children, perhaps? who may not be familiar with Carol Channing--as, it occurs to me now, mine are unlikely to be.) A fine way to start off a Sunday morning..... And now Im feeling this nearly irrepressible urge to chop off my hair and bleach it blonde. https://youtube/watch?v=G502-aSNs1Y
