As of 2012 it was reported that DIVORCE among combat vets had increased by 42% since the beginning of the Iraqi & Afghanistan wars. In addition, the possibility of divorce INCREASES WITH EVERY MONTH OF DEPLOYMENT (The Christian Post). The one MARKER for strong marriages is the HABITS FORMED WITHIN THE FIRST 3 MONTHS OF DEPLOYMENT. The reason it seems to work this way is that THE HABITS INITIALLY FORMED are sometimes all that the spouse/partner has of the DEPLOYED SPOUSE for the duration of the deployment. The temptation of the spouse left behind to form new habits well into deployment CAN ALIENATE the returning spouse and make him/her feel redundant like a vestigial organ. In 2003 a friend was talking about an astronaut friend of his aboard the SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA in 2003 (he had spoken with his wife previous to the loss of the ship). One of the last conversations they had included talk about a broken toilet in their house that was causing her stress. Believe it or not, THAT is the kind of connection, conversation, glue that keeps marriage... relevant from such a long distance away.
