As of close of business today (Friday), I become an unemployed bum (though a nicely paid unemployed bum). I complete stage 2 of my life and move on to stage 3, retirement. Stage 1. I can still remember as a 15 year old traveling on the train to begin my training in the Royal Australian Navy at HMAS Leeuwin in WA for a year. Del Shannon had the top 40 hit with "Runaway" in that year in 1967. I served through my 20 years in HMAS Albatross (Naval Air Station Nowra). HMAS Kuttabul (Sydney). HMAS Melbourne (Aircraft Carrier). HMAS Derwent (Destroyer Escort) . HMAS Adelaide (Guided Missile Frigate and part of her first crew) and paying off from the Navy on HMAS Sydney (Guided Missile Frigate). Adventures in the Navy was seeing half the world. Being involved in a collision with an American warship, killing 74 American sailors. Being involved in fighting a fire in one of the hangers at HMAS Albatross with the loss of 12 or 13 Grumman S2E Tracker aircraft. To running aground on the HMAS Adelaide. To bring HMAS Adelaide as brand new warship into Sydney Harbour. This all within the realms of the Vietnam War and the Cold War. To move on to stage 2. Stage 2. Joined the Australian Bureau of Meteorology in Melbourne, then to Darwin for two years. Moved on to Alice Springs for 12 years. Then Mackay for 4 years and my final destination Cairns for 7 years nearly and still counting. The Weather Bureau has given me a redundancy to which I gleefully have taken so I can move onto stage 3. Stage 3. Retirement. Watch Rabbitohs play on the TV uninterrupted because of work. Hopefully go down to Sydney and watch Rabbitohs play and see all my Rabbitohs friends. And see the Rabbitohs win a few Grand Finals. And live out the rest of my life with my lovely wife Margo.
