As of yesterday, the museum building and the art contained within it are no longer owned by the City of Detroit, but are now the property of The Detroit Institute of Arts, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation. Its a huge relief that the art was saved from being auctioned off to repay city creditors (and will be safe from such threats in the future), but honestly I feel sad about this technical property transfer. It was always a great source of pride to walk in through the grand entrance on Woodward Avenue and enjoy the art knowing that, as a citizen of the city, I--along with 700,000 fellow residents--were part owner of these objects. It feels different now.
