As one of my heroes, Michael Pollan, discusses in his book, Cooked, we do not cook enough of our meals for ourselves. And this is highly relevant! Cooking our own food at home reconnects us to our family, our friends, our food chain, our earth, our health. It reminds us that meat has bones and blood because its an animal and that vegetables have dirt on them because they come from the earth. Cooking also matters because those habits have healthy effects on us: Cooking dinner frequently at home is associated with consumption of a healthier diet whether or not one is trying to lose weight. Strategies are needed to encourage more cooking among the general population and help infrequent cookers better navigate the food environment outside the home. journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid=9412616&fileId=S1368980014001943
