As our lives move forward, we grow. Growth sometimes takes the form of hurt and pain. I chose to do the cover story with NBC because I wanted other people to become accustomed to the stories of what it is like to be a transgender person. I knew it would hurt me and it did, but I did it because I hoped allowing a clear and crystal window into my heart and into my life would help those who still need to understand transgender people to better understand us. Some of the comments I have had in many blogs and periodicals and in many social networks, are detestable. I look like a monster, frankenstein, and have been mutilated, that I am never going to be a woman but will always be an it. Misgendering and comments about transitional changes are horrid. These comments and opinions are part of a paradigm I am working on changing; the false paradigm that transgender women are just emotionally or mentally messed up men, and transgender men are just emotionally or messed up women, all posing and trying to fool everyone. That paradigm is false. Transgender men ARE men, and transgender women ARE women, and always were. Science shows we are born and have a birth difference from our development in the womb. We have the right brain in the wrong body. Transitioning is a way of lowering the levels of deadly gender dysphoria that results from us having the right brain with the wrong body. Gender dysphoria is part of the reason we have an atrocious 43% suicide attempt rate measured against the general publics rate of 1.6%. I marvel that our descriptions of the amazing peace, and the overwhelming joy that we feel after transitioning are met with bigoted disdain and condescension by those who are invested in the false paradigm. They do not look at the science, nor look at the evidence of our positive change at all. So, I leave those people behind and seek to help educate those who will be honest and open seekers of truth.
