As parents, one of the most important tasks we have is teaching our children the difference between right and wrong; good and bad. My daughter is still young enough that my challenges are not yet great. Throwing food on the floor: wrong. Biting: bad. Playing nice: Good Kisses: the best. My heart sinks as I watch the evening news. Feeling under the weather, and curled up under a blanket, I could have really used a good news story. But instead the pictures flashed on the screen. Young boys. Innocent wonder. Curious eyes. Many of them have their faces covered. Some holding guns. Some make-believe bombs...others just toting the lines of the men around them. I almost wait with baited breath. For a sign of hope. I see some boys standing by, watching, looking less than impressed...they give me hope. But I wait more for their parents. Their guides in life. To grab them. And shake them. And say no. This is wrong. This is not the way. My parents taught me, even if you arent born with a silver spoon in your mouth, it does not mean you shouldnt do everything in your power to strive for one. Where is the society to tell these children to strive? To reach for the stars...to be all they can be? I know the voices are there. The voices of reason. The true guides for life. I have many who have shared these stories with me; the stories of the true warriors of peace. I want to see you flash across my screen. I dont want you to be the exception. I want to see your children. But more importantly, I want you to see your children. See them and lead them. For that is the greatest gift you can give them. If indeed, All that is needed for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing, the images of young boys dressed as terrorists and praying for their own swift martyrdom, needs to be a reminder to people around the world of the reason why, sadly, that peace still seems so far away...but hope will never be lost. At least not for me. And not for my child...
