As part of Shoalhaven NAIDOC Week celebrations Shoalhaven police were involved in this mornings Remembrance March through the Nowra CBD. The Command would like to thank the local Aboriginal community for inviting us to be part of the Remembrance March and the NAIDOC Week Opening Ceremony. As part of our involvement in NAIDOC Week celebrations we are going to have a display at the NAIDOC Week Family Fun Day on Wednesday 9 July at the Added Area, Nowra Showground. Come along and have a chat to your local police, including our Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer, Ben Wellington and Aboriginal Issues Officer, Inspector Steve Johnson. Staff from the Aboriginal Coordination Unit and some our IPROWD (Indigenous Police Recruitment Our Way Delivery) Program trainees will also be on hand. The NSW Police Force Dog Squad, Mounted Police and POLAIR (police helicopter) will also be there, with POLAIR landing about 11am. Inspector Steve Johnson, Aboriginal Issues Officer for Shoalhaven Police said, “We are keen to have a chat about how local police are working in partnership with the Aboriginal community to deliver meaningful outcomes for Aboriginal people. One of our focuses is on crime prevention initiatives for Aboriginal youth, these include Boxing Crime Away and the Cops and Koori Kids Fishing Workshop Program.” The Shoalhaven Local Area Command (LAC) is also conducting an Aboriginal Artwork Competition as part of NAIDOC Week Sunday 6 to 13 July 2014. The competition is open to children who reside in the Shoalhaven Local Area Command and are of Primary or High school ages. An artwork theme of Reconciliation, Police and Community is being encouraged. There will be two winners, one from Primary school aged children and one from High school aged children. Competition entries will be accepted from Sunday 6 July 2014, with all entries needed to be submitted by 4pm Sunday 13 July 2014. The finalists will be chosen by the Judges, Superintendent Joe Cassar, Commander Shoalhaven LAC, Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer, Ben Wellington and a local Aboriginal artist, Troy Lenihan. There will be two finalists chosen from the two age groups, with the winning pieces of artwork being displayed permanently at the Nowra Police Station. Acting Superintendent Griffin states, “This is a great opportunity for our local kids and teenagers to show their talent and have their art placed on display for both police and community members to see.” Competition guidelines:- - One entry per person and entrant must live within the Shoalhaven LAC. - Parent’s approval for children to enter competition. - Artwork to be submitted electronically (photo taken and submitted) with main artwork being used for finalists. - All submissions to have entrant’s name, date of birth, next of kin name, contact details (phone number and address) and school attended. - Entries to be sent to Inspector Steve Johnson via e-mail [email protected] or call 44219640 with inquiries. - Artwork to be no smaller than A4 size. - Finalists to approve for their artwork to be proudly displayed at Nowra Police Station. Finalists invited to Nowra Police Station for the announcement of and presentation to the winners (Date to be announced) There will be prizes awarded to the two winners, plus encouragement awards. .
