As part of increasing my own understanding of service composition, - TopicsExpress

As part of increasing my own understanding of service composition, Im intrigued by all of the orders of service for nine lessons and carols, and that the vast majority of them still include the big two, i.e. O Come All Ye Faithful and Hark The Herald. Weve organised a public vote for our congregational carols for the last four years for our carol service and with over sixty people voting this year, the six carols that made the service were: Once in royal Davids city Silent night In the bleak mid-winter See him lying on a bed of straw Away in a manger O little town of Bethlehem This is slightly more challenging for me as its less descants for the choir - I may try to write one or two for the other carols next year, if I can second guess the voting - but I wondered how people felt about O Come (which was eighth in the vote) and Hark The Herald (a distant fourteenth). Do we feel obliged to include them as big statements, is it a musical drive for descants and arrangements or are they just more popular elsewhere?
