As part of our preparation for the community visitation we’ll be having next summer, we had recently a meeting on strategic planning. Now, it so happens that, at least in male Benedictine communities, neither meetings nor planning sessions are high on the popularity list! Which led to a remark offered by Abbot Austin at the end of the session, that one of the primary ways in which we show love for one another is by not mentally “checking out,” by sticking with the brethren even when efforts at community renewal might seem unnecessary or repetitive or futile, by resisting the temptation to retreat to metaphorical concrete bunkers where we can avoid being challenged or asked to grow. A good reminder of the need for steadfastness and perseverance that is so essential for the on-going conversion of life that we vow.
