As part of the first watershed –wide survey since 2001, this week the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency sampled fish at the Conservancy’s Big Darby Creek Headwaters Preserve in Logan County. Ohio EPA uses standardized methods to compare the biological health of streams across Ohio. We’ll have to wait on the results from the Headwaters Preserve sampling, but to date, the Big and Little Darby Creek results look very good, setting some “records” for highest possible fish community scores and for numbers of rare fish species such as spotted darter and Tippecanoe darter at a collection site. These are photos of the Ohio EPA fish crew sampling the Headwaters Preserve today, with photos of the collection, and identification and sorting of species, including the logperch and grass pickerel (pictured). Conservation efforts to protect the Big and Little Darby Creeks are outstanding among those in Ohio. Thank you for your support for protecting the Big Darby Creek and its watershed!
