As part of wider Field Work day, and inter-generational Heritage Project, S3 Pupils from the Anderson High School have taken part in World War One research. The day involved visits to various locations around Lerwick which could help inform them of the local World War One story. One group visited the Shetland Family History Society Office. There they looked up the stories of soldiers who were on the Anderson Educational Institute Memorial, as well as others whose memorials pupils intend to visit in France and Belgium in 2015. Others also did work at the Shetland War Memorial, as well as the Memorials at St Columbas Parish Church, and the St Ringans, now the library. Microfilm research from The Shetland Times of 1916 also took place at the library. Another group experienced the 10th Cruiser Squadron Exhibition at the Shetland Museum and Archives, and heard a talk from Curator Dr Ian Tait about the crucial strategic role of the navy in Shetland during the Great War. Another group learned about the Drill Hall and Territorials during the Great War, and were given a tour of Fort Charlottes buildings by local Lerwick Historian, Douglas Sinclair. The weather was fine for them.
