As per his policy of confirming to the injunctions of the Shariat, Aurangzeb imposed Jaziya on the Hindus throughout the empire from the 2nd April 1679. This tax was abolished by Emperor Akbar in 1564 as he did nto believe in the Quranic distinction between the believers (Muslims) and non-believers among his subjects. The tax was a heavy-burden on the poor. For the middle and the upper classes, it was not so much the economic burden but the humiliation and harassment resulting from it which offended them.
