As promised in newsletter (sent this morning to all current members) up for discussion/opinions ---- Living up here in deepest west Cumbria, and driving on many unlit roads during the long hours of darkness, Ive been thinking about what I consider to be a road safety issue: Namely the current craze (& plethora) of extremely white lights (many also have additional strobe lights alongside too) that have been fitted to the front of pedal cycles . . . AND HELMETS of the riders. Without referring to the legalities of the Road Traffic Act, all I do know is that the is (rightly so) a regulation pertaining to direction of beam(s) . . . and (I think) height of forward-facing lights. Living up here in west (& darkest) Cumbria (sounds like something from a Paddington Bear story). . . . I have found that there is a fairly substantial proportion of riders who would appear to have the cycle lights facing straight ahead eg: NOT angled downwards to pick out any of plentiful quantity pot-holes and obstruction ahead. These extremely bright, lights would, arguably not have the finer points of shading beam spread and scatter and do, in my opinion, frequently dazzle drivers of on-coming vehicles. However, even worse than those are the lights of similar light output, and frequently having a strobe effect of operation, that are attached (occasionally in multiples!) to the riders safety helmets. As the rider pedals and keeps their balance on the cycle, movement of their head forms a very distracting and, at times, a pure white light that blinds the oncoming motorists. I have experienced occasions whereby more that one cyclist have these lights - causing momentary blindness - and a lage safety issue. Id be interested to hear other drivers views on this subject!
